Mamelodi Sundowns set a new record on Wednesday for the longest unbeaten run in the DStv Premiership as they came from behind to beat Stellenbosch 3-1 at a rain soaked Atteridgeville.

It was their 32nd unbeaten match in the league, stretching back to September last year when they lost 2-1 to SuperSport United.

It beats the old mark of 31 league games without defeat set by Kaizer Chiefs between January and November 2005.

Sundowns also matched Chiefs’ PSL-era record of eight successive wins from the start of the season, which they set in 2014, despite making seven changes to their line-up from the weekend’s cup win over AmaKhosi. It means thery have 24 points from their opening eight games and already opened up a runaway lead at the head of the standin gs.

But the overall record for longest run from the start of the season still belongs to Chiefs, who went won 17 successive games from the start of the 1991 season before Bloemfontein Celtic brought their run to an end.

Sundowns’ record run of 32 unbeaten matches is made up of 26 wins and six draws. Since coach Rulani Mokwena became solo head coach they have not lost a league game. After Wednesday’s win, his unbeaten total of league games he has taken charge is 28.

Sundowns’ previous record was 28 league games unbeaten between January 2018 and January 2019, when AmaZulu ended their run with a shock 2-0 win at Loftus Versfeld.
