The City of Johannesburg is thrilled to announce the start of the 2024/2025 public swimming season, with 28 pools set to open their doors on 1 September 2024. These initial openings will provide plenty of opportunities for residents to enjoy swimming, with a further 19 pools scheduled to open gradually as the season progresses. The swimming season will run until the end of March 2025, allowing ample time for everyone to make the most of these facilities.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Development, Councillor Kabelo Gwamanda, and his team will conduct oversight visits to each public swimming pool as they open in a staggered manner across the city.
These visits are part of the city’s commitment to ensuring the community has access to safe and well-maintained recreational facilities.
“The safety of our residents is top priorities. Through these oversight visits, we aim to expedite the opening of pools while ensuring they are in excellent condition,” said Cllr Gwamanda. “We recognise the importance of these facilities, particularly as the warmer months approach.”
Swimming pools will be open from Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 6pm, and on weekends from 9am to 5pm. During public holidays and Mondays during school holidays, pools will be open from 9am to 5pm, and will be closed on normal Mondays.
Entry fees start from R6 for children and R20 for adults. More details on pricing and pool locations are available on the City of Johannesburg’s official website at www.joburg.org.za.
Residents are invited to enjoy swimming, water aerobics, and learn essential water safety skills. To ensure a safe environment, pushing, running, orca pipes, and glass items are prohibited in the pool and deck areas. Alcohol and narcotics are also strictly forbidden.
This season is about more than just swimming; it’s about fostering community, health, and safety. The city will continue to update the community on pool opening schedules. Let’s make this swimming season one to remember.
