As Sandton remains the City of Johannesburg’s key economic hub, the municipality is acting to support its growth with sustainable, efficient, and inclusive transport solutions to meet rising development and travel demands.
The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of the City’s Transport Department, has initiated a comprehensive review and update of the Sandton Integrated Transport Master Plan, adopted in 2013.
Over the past decade, the City has upgraded pedestrian sidewalks to encourage walkability, built two bridges over the M1 Freeway to connect Sandton to Alex and prepared for the extension of Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit services into Sandton.
Meanwhile, as part of the Rea Vaya construction, residents, businesses, and commuters have been notified of temporary changes at Katherine Street and Pybus Road. Hazards include deep excavations, uneven walkways, and heavy machinery. Use only the designated, barricaded pedestrian crossing with flag personnel assistance. Crossing elsewhere is prohibited and dangerous.
The 12-month review aims to assess progress made since the plan’s initial adoption and align strategic transport planning with Sandton’s evolving urban landscape. It will focus on:
- M1 Highway (Eastern Boundary) – Connection to Johannesburg CBD, Midrand, and Pretoria.
- Grayston Drive (East-West Route) – Access into Sandton CBD and linking the M1 to Sandton Drive.
- Rivonia Road – Linking Rivonia to Rosebank through the Sandton CBD.
- Winnie Mandela Drive (Western Boundary) – Connecting Rosebank, Sandton, Fourways, and Randburg.
- Katherine Street & Marlboro Drive – Linking Sandton to surrounding residential and industrial areas.
- Sandton Drive (Western Link) – Connecting Winnie Mandela Drive and Katherine Street.
“As Johannesburg evolves, our transport infrastructure must evolve with it,” says Themba Mathibe, the CEO of the JDA. “The review reflects the City’s commitment to improving access, reducing congestion, and enabling economic inclusion through well-planned transport networks.”
