PERSONALISED TRAVEL AND NATURE-LED EXPERIENCES RESHAPE SOUTH AFRICA’S TOURISM LANDSCAPE

South Africa’s tourism sector is entering a new phase of growth, with traveller expectations increasingly shaped by a desire for more meaningful and personalised experiences. Across the industry, operators are seeing a shift away from rigid itineraries towards journeys that prioritise flexibility, personal interests and deeper engagement with destinations.

Research from the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association (SATSA) further shows that travellers are increasingly motivated by memorable experiences and authentic engagement with places, cultures and natural environments rather than simply higher levels of spending on accommodation or luxury services.

This shift is prompting hospitality operators to rethink how travel experiences are designed and delivered.

“Travellers today want journeys that feel intentional and aligned with their personal interests,” says Shalom Mashiri, General Manager at Dream Hotels & Resorts’ Malkoha Lake St Lucia. “That means engaging with guests before they arrive and shaping experiences around how they want to connect with the destination.”

Mashiri says that, in response to these shifts, Malkoha Lake St Lucia has introduced a digital pre-arrival process that allows guests to tailor their stay based on individual preferences, from activity levels and dining experiences to cultural exploration and time spent in nature. Rather than following fixed daily schedules, itineraries are shaped around guest intent and can evolve throughout the stay.

“We’re seeing a growing desire for experiences that reconnect people with nature,” she says. “Whether that’s through quiet moments in the forest, exploring waterways by canoe or learning about local culture, guests are increasingly seeking journeys that feel grounding and restorative.”

Nature, conservation landscapes and connected travel

Across the tourism sector, there is growing recognition that travellers want to experience destinations as connected landscapes rather than isolated attractions. Industry operators increasingly speak about designing journeys that move across ecosystems and communities, allowing visitors to engage with nature, culture and conservation in a more integrated way.

This approach is particularly relevant in regions such as Zululand, where diverse environments exist within relatively close proximity.

Malkoha Lake St Lucia sits within the UNESCO-listed iSimangaliso Wetland Park and forms part of what is often referred to as the Zululand Wilderness Triangle, where wetlands, coastal forest and bushveld ecosystems converge. This ecological connectivity allows visitors to experience multiple landscapes within a single journey.

Through partnerships with regional operators including Makhasa Private Game Lodge and Untravelled Trails, guests are able to move across these environments, combining lake-based activities, forest immersion and Big Five safari experiences. Activities range from canoe safaris and guided walks to foraging experiences, cultural trails and community visits.

The growing focus on nature-led travel also reflects a broader shift towards restorative tourism. Industry insights suggest travellers are increasingly seeking destinations that allow them to disconnect from daily pressures and reconnect with natural environments.

Experiences such as silent birding, guided forest walks and stargazing encourage slower, more mindful engagement with the landscape, offering guests opportunities to step away from digital distractions and immerse themselves in the surrounding environment.

As South Africa’s tourism industry evolves, operators are placing greater emphasis on personalisation, flexibility and deeper destination engagement. For regions such as Zululand, this approach presents an opportunity to position the destination not simply as a place to visit, but as a landscape where travellers can experience multiple ecosystems, cultures and rhythms within a single curated journey.
