EMPOWERING SOUTH AFRICA’S FUTURE THROUGH STEM: LAUNCH OF THE 2025 EDUCATE MATRIC MATHS AND SCIENCE REVISION PROGRAMME AIMED AT BRIDGING SOUTH AFRICA’S STEM SKILLS GAP

South Africa is at a critical juncture. As the Fourth Industrial Revolution transforms global economies, emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and automation are rapidly reshaping how societies function and how businesses compete. For South Africa to take its place on the global stage, it must urgently address a growing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) skills shortage: a gap that threatens to constrain innovation, economic growth, and job creation.

One of the most effective solutions lies in foundational education. The 2025 implementation of the eduCate: Matric Maths and Science Revision Programme will be launched on 31 July 2025, hosted by Liberty, a key partner in the programme, along with other corporate and public action-leaders who believe in the potential of young South Africans. Incepted in 2010 by Primestars, eduCate has a strong legacy as a powerful catalyst in equipping young South Africans, especially those from high schools in under-resourced communities, with the tools they need to succeed in these critical subjects. The YouthStart Foundation further amplifies the in-school implementation of the programme with a particular focus on schools in rural and overlooked areas.

Data from the programme shows consistent, measurable improvements. Beneficiaries achieve an average annual performance increase of over 15%, with top performers improving by more than 25% from Grade 11 to their final matric exams. These gains are reflected in year-on-year increases in Bachelor, Diploma, and other tertiary-qualifying passes.

According to Amelia Beattie, Executive for Sustainable Impact at Liberty, “STEM choice is not merely about academic subjects; it is the building block for innovation, growth, and economic freedom. As a responsible corporate citizen deeply committed to the sustainability of South Africa and the continent, Liberty prioritises the development of Maths and Science skills.”

“We are intentional about sparking a passion for Maths and Science. Our vision is to create an environment where every learner who comes through our interventions has an equal opportunity to succeed—made possible through targeted programmes like eduCate,” continues Beattie.

The eduCate programme is implemented across all 9 provinces. It delivers full Math and Science CAPS curriculum revision through:

  • Cinema-based learning in commercial theatres,
  • Mobile cinema units for schools outside cinema zones,
  • An interactive and zero-rated online platform and
  • In-school support implementations.

“EduCate showcases how business can contribute to a Learning Renaissance by investing in the education of future industry leaders, amplifying the Primestars mission of developing youth from schoolroom to boardroom. To the Class of 2025, be proud of reaching this pivotal moment in your educational journey. As you navigate the uncertainties of the future, know that this programme is behind you with the faith in your abilities and finish strong. ”  – Martin Sweet, Executive Chairman & CEO of Primestars.
