JOBURG MARKS INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR CLEAN AIR FOR BLUE SKIES WITH WEEK-LONG CAMPAIGN

The City of Johannesburg’s Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD) led a city-wide Clean Air Week campaign to observe International Day for Clean Air for Blue Skies, which is commemorated globally on Sunday, 7 September 2025.

Running from 2 to 7 September 2025, the campaign sought to raise awareness about the dangers of poor air quality, promote sustainable practices, and mobilise residents and stakeholders to take collective action against air pollution.

This year’s theme, “Racing for Air”, highlights the urgent need to accelerate solutions for cleaner air. Drawing inspiration from the speed and endurance of racing, the theme underscored the vital role of clean air in protecting public health, strengthening economies, and building resilient communities.

Key activities during the week included:

  • Air Quality Schools Competition – engaging high schools to expand learners’ knowledge about air quality. The competition received twelve entries, with nine schools participating in the commemoration event to showcase their projects.
  • Information Sharing Session – hosted with the Health Department for health promoters, community-based organisations, and nurses to strengthen awareness of the link between air quality and public health.
  • Education and Awareness Campaigns – highlighting the connection between environmental health and well-being.
  • Vehicle Emission Testing – conducted in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Environment to monitor vehicle emissions and educate motorists about curbing pollution.

Air pollution remains one of Johannesburg’s most pressing public health challenges, disproportionately affecting children, the elderly, and vulnerable communities. It contributes to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, premature deaths, and worsens the impacts of climate change.

“Clean Air Week aligns local action with a global movement for cleaner air and healthier communities,” said Musa Mahlatji, Deputy Director for Air Quality Management. “Through education, awareness, and engagement, we are advancing Goal 5 of the City’s Air Quality Management Plan: empowering and informing residents about air quality.”

The City operates eight air quality monitoring stations that provide real-time data, accessible to the public through the South African Air Quality Information System’s website and app.

By commemorating this day, the City reaffirms its commitment to building healthier, more resilient communities while working towards a future of cleaner air and blue skies for all.
