The Gauteng Provincial Legislature is proud to announce the opening of nominations for the 11th edition of the prestigious Vita Basadi Awards as part of the 2026 Women’s Month programme.
The Vita Basadi Awards celebrate and honour women who continue to make a meaningful contribution towards uplifting communities across Gauteng through selfless service, leadership, compassion, and commitment to social development.
Members of the public are encouraged to nominate deserving women who dedicate their time and energy to empowering others, supporting vulnerable groups, and making a positive impact in their communities without expecting recognition in return.
Nominations are now open to women of all ages, backgrounds, cultures, faiths, sexual orientations, and abilities, including women living with disabilities.
To submit a nomination, individuals must provide the nominee’s name together with a max of 300-word motivation outlining the work undertaken by the nominee and reasons why she deserves recognition. Nominations for multiple categories are permitted; however, each submission must include a category-specific motivation aligned to the relevant criteria.
Please note: Nominations are not assessed based on the number of submissions received, but rather on the strength of the motivation and the meaningful, selfless contribution the nominee makes to the community.
The 2026 edition introduces two new award categories aimed at recognising excellence within the education sector:
- Innovative Educator Award – recognising a science teacher who brings the subject to life in an inspiring and innovative manner; and
- Community Builder Award – celebrating an educator who has made a meaningful contribution towards the academic growth and development of learners.
The Young Dignitary Award is open to nominations for girl learners in primary and secondary schools. To ensure authenticity and avoid misrepresentation, all nominations in this category must be validated by the relevant school.
The Guardian Award recognises women serving in protection and emergency-related professions, including security guards, police and military officers, law enforcement officials, firefighters, lifeguards, and emergency service personnel.
The winners will be honoured during the prestigious Vita Basadi Awards Ceremony to be hosted by the Speaker of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Morakane Mosupyoe, in August 2026.
The closing date for nominations is Tuesday, 30 June 2026.
