Urban Warriors denied three points in KwaMashu

Ajax Cape Town dominated most of their Absa Premiership encounter against Golden Arrows, but ultimately had to settle for a point following a 1-1 stalemate at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on Saturday afternoon.

Nkanyiso Mngwengwe and Prince Nxumalo on the score sheet for either side in what was a clash controlled by windy conditions in the KwaZulu-Natal province.

The Urban Warriors looked to have taken off from where they left off in midweek as Mark Mayambela had the ball in the back of the net as early as the sixth minute. But his joy was short-lived with the linesman’s flag raised for offside – replays, though, suggested otherwise.

Boosted by the slice of good fortunate, Arrows found the opener with 13 minutes on the clock. Jody February unable to hold onto the ball as Mngwengwe pounced to sweep home the equaliser.

Ajax Cape Town continued to dominate proceedings, but let themselves down in the final third as first Rivaldo Coetzee and then Mayambela squandered goal-scoring chances. The latter brilliantly denied by Nkosingiphile Gumede in the 27th minute.

Nxumalo then set Mosadi on his bike seven minutes later, but again Gumede was up to the task; the goal-minder quick off his line to clear from danger.

With the wind pushing them forward in attack in the second, Ajax Cape Town looked even more menacing as Abafana Bes’thende dropped deep in trying to weather the storm.

Roscoe Pietersen and Mosadi sending their respective shots’ inches wide of Gumede’s goal.

Gumede was at it again in the 75th minute, this time to deny Mayambela, but the shot-stopper could do nothing two minutes later as Nxumalo leveled matters in his home province.

The burly forward nodding home Thabo Mosadi’s corner-kick, 1-1.

Both teams had their chances in the final exchanges, but in the end they had to settle for a point apiece. The Urban Warriors subsequently move up to 10th place while Arrows’ remain in sixth.
