‘SPAR SAVES’ CHRISTMAS FOR SHOPPERS FEELING THE SQUEEZE THIS FESTIVE SEASON

SPAR has launched its new “Save Christmas” campaign, further adding to the Super Savings initiative, meant to assist shoppers to enjoy the festive season without the financial stress that has come to define year-end.

Christmas may be a time of joy, but behind the bright lights and celebrations is a familiar struggle: juggling long shopping lists, stretching household budgets, feeling the pressure to host the perfect celebration, and meeting big family expectations. SPAR wants to make sure that the magic of the season doesn’t get lost in the stress of trying to afford it.

According to the Household Affordability Index (2024), it reflects the pressures South Africans face – for instance, the national average cost of a household food basket for November 2024 stood at R5 361.04. At the same time, the TGM Christmas Insights 2024 Report shows that 67% of South African shoppers say that price is the main factor influencing their Christmas shopping choices. These figures point to a reality – while the festive season is about celebration and connection, many households are navigating it with one eye on the budget.

SPAR is setting out to Save Christmas

With this reality in mind, SPAR’s “Save Christmas” campaign is turning the story around. By unlocking deep festive savings on essentials such as quality meats, vegetables, grocery staples and holiday treats, SPAR is making it possible for shoppers to stretch every rand without compromising what makes Christmas special. Whether it’s for a traditional feast, Christmas lunch for an extended family, or the small but meaningful touches that make the season feel like home – SPAR is committed to helping shoppers get there.

Leading up to Christmas, SPAR will be rolling out a series of festive deals every two weeks, giving shoppers even more reasons to celebrate smartly this season. From pantry must-haves and fresh produce to indulgent festive favourites, each wave of offers is designed to help customers plan and shop with ease. This makes it possible to spread the cost of Christmas while still enjoying the quality and variety SPAR is known for. These rotating savings ensure that every visit to SPAR brings something new to discover, helping households stay festive-ready right up to Christmas Day.

Community First Sourcing

SPAR’s Christmas offering is shaped at store level, where individual retailers cater to the unique traditions, tastes and needs of the communities they serve. Whether sourcing locally loved festive favourites or tailoring in-store experiences to reflect each neighbourhood’s character, SPAR retailers focus on creating a season that feels personal and authentic. This hyper-local approach – grounded in long-standing relationships and an understanding of what matters most to each community – continues to set a SPAR Christmas apart.

“The pressure to deliver a memorable Christmas should never outweigh the joy of celebrating it,” says Mpudi Maubane, National PR, Communications & Sponsorships Manager at The SPAR Group. “We recognise that the cost of making magic has become a heavy load on many families, and with our ‘Save Christmas’ campaign, we’re making a stand against that economic stress. We’re not just offering discounts – we’re actively restoring festive spirit. Every deal, every saving, is designed to help lighten the load so that shoppers can focus on what truly matters: sharing joy, laughter, and connection”.

The campaign taps into what the festive season really feels like for many people – full trolleys, long lists, and the constant worry about costs adding up. SPAR wants shoppers to feel a little lighter, knowing they can still enjoy the traditions they love without stretching their wallets too far.

This festive season, SPAR is not just offering promotions; it is helping South Africans reclaim Christmas from economic stress. Because no one should have to choose between celebration and affordability.
