Now in its 16th year of advancing health and wellness among South African youth through football, the Discovery Schools Soccer programme continues to expand its reach—driving greater participation, elevating competition, and inspiring meaningful impact across communities.
Established in 2009, Discovery Schools Soccer has grown into one of Johannesburg’s leading youth development platforms, reaching over 860 schools and more than 100 000 young participants since inception. The programme offers structured playing opportunities for primary and high school boys and girls, while also investing in the ecosystem around them by upskilling over 10 000 coaches to date. Beyond the game itself, Discovery Schools Soccer fosters leadership, sportsmanship, personal growth and essential life skills that extend far beyond the field.

The 2026 season has kicked off with the Discovery Boys Festival, taking place from 13–15 May at the AW Muller Stadium at the University of Johannesburg. Over 120 school teams entered the regional selection phase, with the field ultimately narrowed to 13 standout teams competing for scouting opportunities. Following the tournament, top performers will be selected to represent Johannesburg, Southerns and Wits at the prestigious JPSFA Bill Stewart Tournament at the University of Free State.
The momentum continues on the final Saturday of May with the Discovery Girls Festival at Rivonia Primary School. From this event, the JPSFA will select 30 players to represent Johannesburg South and Johannesburg North at the Fran Hilton Smith Festival, held at Camp Discovery in August. Together, the Boys and Girls Festivals place a strong spotlight on primary school football, bringing together regional teams from over 60 schools in one of the busiest and most exciting days on the football calendar.
Beyond May, the Discovery Primary Schools Knock-Out Cup will see approximately 128 schools compete in a high-energy round-robin tournament, culminating in knockout stages where top honours are fiercely contested.
Through the winter months, the Discovery Boys High Schools Knock-Out Cup keeps momentum high, engaging thousands of learners annually. The tournament not only showcases football talent but also strengthens communities, develops coaches and promotes active lifestyles. As one of the city’s largest high school football platforms, it continues to grow year on year, featuring thousands of players and serving as a powerful catalyst for youth development, mentorship, and community pride.
The Discovery JVW Diamond League Playoff, scheduled for 19–20 September, highlights Discovery’s ongoing partnership with the Janine van Wyk Football Club. This collaboration continues to elevate girls’ football by providing high school athletes with the platform, visibility and confidence to pursue the sport at a higher level.
Rounding off the season is the seven-week Discovery Alex Schools League, hosted at the 3 Square Sports Stadium in Alexandra. Catering to under-13 boys and girls, the league provides an inclusive and competitive environment for young players to develop their skills.
“Every meaningful journey starts somewhere and ours with Discovery Schools Soccer began in 2009, rooted in Discovery’s core purpose: to make people healthier and to enhance and protect their lives,” says Celeste Williams, Head of Sponsorships at Discovery. “Football instils resilience, respect, and teamwork – values that extend well beyond the field. Through this programme, we aim to help shape future leaders and contribute to building stronger, healthier and more connected communities.”
