70 GRADUATES TAKE THE NEXT STEP TOWARDS ECONOMIC FREEDOM

The City of Johannesburg has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling youth unemployment and building an inclusive economy through strategic investments in skills development, celebrating the graduation of 70 young entrepreneurs who successfully completed management qualifications.

The graduation ceremony, held in partnership with the Services Sector Education and Training Authority (Services SETA) and Phosaane Training Institute, marks another milestone in the City’s efforts to equip unemployed youth with practical business knowledge and employability competencies that position them to participate meaningfully in South Africa’s economy.

Addressing graduates during the ceremony, the Director stated:

“The City of Johannesburg is proud to partner with Services SETA in creating opportunities that empower young people through education and skills development. By investing in our youth today, we are investing in future entrepreneurs, business leaders and employers who will contribute towards sustainable economic growth.”

The Director further acknowledged Services SETA for its continued investment in youth empowerment, highlighting that such partnerships play a critical role in addressing unemployment and creating pathways to long-term economic sustainability.

Over the duration of the programme, learners acquired practical knowledge in entrepreneurship, business planning, leadership, business growth and enterprise management, skills that will enable them to establish and manage sustainable businesses or pursue management careers.

Graduates were encouraged to dream boldly, pursue excellence and recognise that the qualification is not the end of their journey, but the beginning of creating opportunities for themselves and others.

One of the graduates, Maphindi Mogajane, shared her inspiring journey of perseverance.

“I enrolled for the Generic Management qualification because I want to become a manager and ultimately grow my own baking business. The qualification was not easy, it required dedication, discipline and a lot of focus. As a single mother of two children, balancing family responsibilities and my studies was challenging, but I remained committed. After one year of hard work, I am proud to have completed the programme.”

Her story reflects the determination shown by many graduates who overcame personal and financial challenges to complete the qualification. Through sustained investment in human capital, the City continues to empower residents to become innovators, employers and active contributors to Johannesburg’s economic transformation.
