The City of Johannesburg’s Department of Economic Development (DED) continues to make significant progress towards the operationalisation of the Alexandra Automotive Hub, a catalytic project aimed at strengthening the township automotive economy, supporting small businesses and creating sustainable employment opportunities for local communities.
Developed through the Joburg Development Agency (JDA) and the Joburg Property Company (JPC), the Hub forms part of the City’s broader commitment to revitalising township economies while positioning Alexandra as an important centre for automotive services, skills development and enterprise growth.
Following extensive stakeholder engagements and project planning, the City has reached an important milestone with the appointment of the Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC) as the anchor tenant. This marks the beginning of the Hub’s transition from project development to operational readiness and provides a strong foundation for activating the facility and attracting complementary businesses and industry partners.
In recent months, the project team has focused on finalising operational arrangements, strengthening stakeholder engagement, coordinating site readiness and establishing governance and management processes to support the successful operation of the facility. Community engagement has remained a key priority throughout this process to ensure that the Hub delivers sustainable economic opportunities for Alexandra residents and local businesses.
Once fully operational, the Alexandra Automotive Hub is expected to contribute towards developing a more competitive township automotive sector by creating an enabling environment for entrepreneurs, supporting business formalisation, promoting technical skills development and strengthening participation in the broader automotive value chain.
The next significant milestone will be the Official Handover Ceremony, scheduled for 22 July 2026, during which the facility will formally be handed over for operations. The ceremony will celebrate the collaborative efforts of all project partners and mark the beginning of a new chapter in positioning the Alexandra Automotive Hub as a centre for automotive enterprise development, innovation and skills advancement.
The official public launch of the Alexandra Automotive Hub will take place during Transport Month in October 2026, where the City will showcase the facility as one of its flagship township economy initiatives. The launch will highlight the Hub’s contribution towards supporting automotive enterprises, attracting investment, developing technical skills and creating pathways for inclusive economic growth. The phased operationalisation and launch programme forms part of the agreed implementation roadmap for the Hub.
DED remains committed to working with strategic partners, industry stakeholders and the Alexandra community to ensure that the Hub becomes a sustainable catalyst for local economic growth, investment and job creation. As implementation progresses, the City looks forward to celebrating this important milestone and unlocking new opportunities for township-based automotive enterprises and the communities they serve.
