When the current season of the ABC Motsepe League in the Western Cape started, many looked the direction of Milano United, FC Cape Town and Ikapa Sporting as the teams to watch.
Not much thought was given to Zizwe United or Steenberg United.
As it turned out, Zizwe obliterated almost every one in the league, winning the season with 73 points from 30 games.
They achieved that with 22 victories, seven draws and just a single defeat the entire season.
What made their season Zizwe’s season even more dominant is that they scored a total 79 goals – the most by any team in the league, and conceded the lowest number of goals, 19.
Their success can be attributed to their strong defence, creative midfield, and lethal attack that ensured that they scored goals like they were going out of fashion.
But it was not an easy ride, as they always had to look behind their shoulder, with Steenberg breathing down their necks.
Steenberg had to settle for second place on 71 points, just two adrift of the champions. It was a tight affair to the end as Steenberg also on a good run of form – winning 21 matches out of their allocated 30. They drew eight and lost one.
Zizwe United has been drawn in Group B at the 2017 ABC Motsepe League Play-Offs alongside the hosts EC Bees (Eastern Cape), Uthongathi (KZN) and Mainstay (Northern Cape).
Zizwe will open their account with a clash against Mainstay on Wednesday, 7 June at 11h00 and will be hoping their good run of form from the league continues unabated into the play-offs.
Ends.
