Ajax hot on the heels of Stellenbosch

AJAX CAPE TOWN CHASE DOWN STELLENBOSCH

Round 27 of the 2018/19 National First Division season saw Stellenbosch’s lead at the top of the log reduced to just one point, with Ajax Cape Town now breathing down their necks.

The Urban Warriors took full advantage of Stellies’ earlier slip-up when they won 1-0 at home to Cape Umoya United in a derby clash on Sunday, boosting their hopes of direct promotion to the top flight. Yet Royal Eagles are also very much in the fight, with their 1-0 win at TS Galaxy ensuring they are just a point further back than Ajax.

Saturday’s headline result was Uthongathi FC claiming an impressive 2-1 away win over log leaders Stellenbosch at Idas Valley Sports Ground (thanks to goals from Mmodi Pule and Menzi Ndwandwe), while Ubuntu Cape Town’s 5-0 hammering of Richards Bay was also significant, allowing them to rise out of the bottom two at the expense of Real Kings (who were held 0-0 at home by Jomo Cosmos).

The other results on April 13 saw Witbank Spurs sink deeper into the mire with a 1-0 loss at home to Mbombela United, and Pretoria University won 2-1 away to TS Sporting at Kabokweni Stadium, while the following day’s biggest win came at Dobsonville Stadium, where Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila won 3-0 over hosts Maccabi FC.

The NFD will continue with a full round of fixtures spread over 20-24 April.
