Matsatsantsa beat Downs

SUPERSPORT END SUNDOWNS HOODOO

SuperSport United beat Tshwane rivals Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 in an Absa Premiership clash at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Goals from Grant Kekana and Ghampani Lungu secured all three points and a first win over Sundowns in six years for Matsatsantsa in the South African capital. The result moves SuperSport up to fourth on the log standings, a point behind the Brazilians who fall to third.

Sundowns duly remain six points adrift of log leaders Orlando Pirates, having now played two games less than the Buccaneers.

Emiliano Tade looked the most likely to give Sundowns an early lead as he tested Ronwen Williams with two tame efforts, before dragging an attempt narrowly wide of goal in the 24th minute following a swift counter-attack.

It would be the visitors to open the scoring, though, on the half-hour mark as Grant Kekana latched onto a pin-point cross from an Aubrey Modiba corner. The defender’s header brushing the woodwork on it’s way into the goal.

Sundowns pushed forward in search of the equaliser before the break, but the SuperSport defence held firm as they carried a narrow lead into the changing room.

The hosts continued to probe following the interval and Tade finally tested Williams in the 58th minute, but his tame header was easily saved by the SuperSport shot-stopper.

Lungu made an immediate impact off the bench to double SuperSport’s lead in the 79th minute. Bradley Grobler teed up the young forward who blasted past Kennedy Mweene after Sundowns failed to clear their lines.

The defending champions ramped up the pressure in the closing stages, but the SuperSport defence and in particular Clayton Daniels, failed to give an inch, as they held on for all three points to condemn Sundowns to their third defeat of the season.
