MACHACHI, MBULE HELP SUPERSPORT DOWN MARITZBURG

  • 27 NOV 2019

SuperSport United brushed aside Maritzburg United 2-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday night.

The result left Matsatsantsa and the Team of Choice placed third and ninth respectively on the league standings.

Matsatsantsa did most of the attacking in the opening stages of the match, with Kudakwashe Mahachi looking lively for the visitors.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns winger broke the deadlock 12 minutes into the match after the Team of Choice’s defence was caught ball watching.

The ball fell kindly for Mahachi in the box and he fired past Maritzburg goalkeeper Richard Ofori to make it 1-0 to SuperSport.

The hosts had to find a way to level matters and they had a chance to score through Bandile Shandu eight minutes before the half-hour mark.

The versatile midfielder unleashed a shot which went straight at Ronwen Williams, who made a good save in the SuperSport goal-posts.

Kaitano Tembo’s men then contained Maritzburg and SuperSport were leading 1-0 during the halftime break.

The Team of Choice came out rejuvenated following their halftime team talk with coach Eric Tinkler and they managed to create chances.

Mxolisi Kunene set up Daniel Morgan, whose effort went just over the crossbar nine minutes after the restart as the hosts looked to restore parity.

Kunene then came close to scoring when he connected with Pogiso Sanoka’s cross, but his powerful header missed the target after the hour-mark.

Maritzburg were left to rue their missed chances as Matsatsantsa doubled their lead through Sipho Mbule with 17 minutes left on the clock.

The South Africa under-23 international beat Ofori with a well-taken shot from outside the box to make it 2-0 to SuperSport.

The hosts pushed for a late consolation goal, but SuperSport stood firm at the back and they emerged 2-0 winners over Maritzburg on the night.
