Bienvenu Eva Nga scored in stoppage-time as Bidvest Wits claimed a 1-0 win to dent Kaizer Chiefs’ hopes of winning the Absa Premiership at FNB Stadium in Soweto on Sunday afternoon.
The Cameroon international scored four minutes into second-half added time as the Clever Boys extended their unbeaten run in the league to nine matches. Three points moves them up to 49 points on the log standings, four behind Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns who are in action at home to Baroka FC later this evening.
Bidvest Wits conjured the first chance after just three minutes with Thulani Hlatshwayo nodding inches wide of goal from Deon Hotto’s free-kick. At the other end of the park, Ricardo Goss was forced into a great save to deny Samir Nurkovic moments later.
Chiefs were dealt a huge blow on the cusp of halftime as Daniel Akpeyi had to be stretched off the park. The Nigerian suffered what looked like a serious injury after his head collided with Mxolisi Macuphu’s knee. Bruce Bvuma duly came on in his place.
The Amakhosi came out guns blazing after the break and created chance after chance. Reeve Frosler fired a rasping shot inches wide of goal in the 79th minute as pressure mounted on the Clever Boys defence.
Goss had to be at his best four minutes later to keep Lorenzo Gordinho’s attempted clearance from finding the back of his own net. Nurkovic then missed from point-blank range as Chiefs continued to knock on Wits’ door.
The Soweto giants were then left lamenting missed chances as Eva Nga burst onto Keegan Ritchie’s long ball forward before firing past the onrushing Bvuma to seal all three points for the Clever Boys.
