This episode spotlights 30-year-old track and field athlete, Akani Simbine, as one of the fastest sprinters in the world, Akani’s story is a testament to the power of speed, precision, and hard work.
South Africa’s sporting hero Akani Simbine was only convinced midway through his high school career in Johannesburg, at the age of 16, to pursue a career in athletics by his mother after initially focusing on becoming a football player. Simbine clocked 10.61 that year and 10.57 the next, but it was only in 2012, at the age of 19, that he truly announced his talent to the world by setting a South African U20 record of 10.19 in Lusaka.
Simbine earned a scholarship to the University of Pretoria, where he studied information science and continued his intense coaching, focusing on honing his skills further. He graduated from the University of Pretoria with a Bachelor of Information Science degree.
Not a stranger to the Olympics, Akani Simbine is heading to his third Olympic Games. For the Paris 2024 Olympics, Simbine has qualified to compete in two major track and field events: the 100-meter sprint and as a key member of South Africa’s 100m men’s relay team. His inclusion in these events underscores his versatility and elite status in sprinting. His performance in the 100 meters remains his signature event, where his explosive start and strong finish are expected to challenge the best in the world.
“Olympics 2016 in Rio was a defining moment for me. Making my first major final was a turning point—it flipped a switch in my mind. Suddenly, I believed in myself more and felt a deep sense of belonging on this stage. That experience shaped me into the athlete I am today.” said Akani
As the Paris 2024 Olympics loom, Akani`s goal is not merely to participate but to stand on the podium, an aspiration that resonates strongly with his team and supporters.
