Lamontville Golden Arrows claimed a 3-1 win over Cape Town City in a Carling Knockout Last 16 encounter at Hammarsdale’s Mpumalanga Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The win saw Abafana Bes’thende progress to the quarterfinals of the South African League Cup and they will now lock horns with Kaizer Chiefs in a DStv Premiership on October 28.

City, on the other hand, bowed out of the lucrative tournament and they will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways when they square off with Richards Bay in a league game on October 29.

Abafana Bes’thende played their usual enterprising football in the opening stages and they took the lead in the 27th minute when Tebogo Tlolane cut inside from the right and scored with a wonderful long-range strike to make it 1-0 to Arrows.

However, the Citizens upped the tempo after the half-hour mark and they managed to level matters when Khanyisa Mayo played a defence-splitting pass to Taahir Goedeman, who netted with a low strike in the 35th minute and the score was 1-1 at halftime.

Coach Mabhuti Khenyeza decided to make a change as he pulled out Lungelo Nguse and introduced Knox Mutizwa who was fouled in the visitors’ box and Nduduzo Sibiya converted the resultant penalty to hand Arrows a 2-1 lead in the 48th minute.

The hosts did not sit back after restoring their lead as they continued to surge forward in numbers and they scored again two minutes before the half-hour with Angelo van Rooi setting up Mutizwa who scored from close range to seal Arrows’ 3-1 win.
