The Joburg Market has officially appointed Sello Michael Makhubela as its Chief Executive Officer, following a highly successful period in an acting role marked by strong performance, innovation and international recognition.
Makhubela was recently honoured with the World Union of Wholesale Markets Manager of the Year Award 2025 at the organisation’s global conference in Brussels. The prestigious accolade recognises excellence in leadership, sustainability and community development within the global fresh produce industry.
Originally from Bela Bela in Limpopo, Makhubela’s formative years were shaped by his grandmother, whom he credits for instilling the values of discipline, humility and respect. These principles continue to guide his leadership approach.
Academically accomplished, Makhubela holds a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the University of Johannesburg, an Honours Degree in Leadership, a Master of Business Administration, and qualifications in project management, international leadership development and municipal finance management.
His career spans senior roles across government and local government, including Municipal Manager at Bela-Bela Local Municipality and Deputy Director at the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development, before joining the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market in executive leadership roles.
During his tenure, the Joburg Market has achieved notable milestones, including consistent monthly revenues exceeding R1 billion, full capital expenditure delivery, a clean audit outcome, and enhanced organisational stability.
Makhubela’s vision for the Joburg Market focuses on smart, technology-driven solutions, including the revitalisation of the meat market, improved customer experience, digital trading platforms and real-time price transparency. These initiatives aim to strengthen the Market’s role in food security, economic inclusion and regional trade.
“As Africa’s largest fresh produce market, we are committed to innovation that supports food security, empowers traders and equips our workforce with future-ready skills,” he says.
Outside of his professional role, Makhubela is an avid volleyball and indoor soccer enthusiast. His guiding principle remains clear: “Don’t dream it, live it.”
