Baroka win

WASTEFUL CITY SLUMP TO ANOTHER LOSS

Cape Town City suffered a fourth successive loss in the Absa Premiership after going down 2-0 at the hands of Baroka FC at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Bakgaga winger Mpho Kgaswane scored with the hosts’ only two shots on target, while the Citizens wasted a litany of chances to continue their slump in form. The Limpopo side has risen above City in the log thanks to this result, with the teams swapping sixth and seventh place.

City made all the early running the match and hit the woodwork as early as the second minute, with Judas Moseamedi beating goalkeeper Ayanda Dlamini to a long ball over the top only to see his effort rebound off the upright.

The visitors created further scoring chances in the opening half hour, with Lyle Lakay and Moseamedi looking particularly lively, but they were soon stunned when Baroka claimed the lead through a superb strike.

A 35th minute free kick saw Mpho Kgaswane touch the ball short to Mduduzi Mdatsane before firing a fearsome left-footed shot through the defensive wall to beat the left hand of City ‘keeper Shu-Aib Walters and ripple the back of the net.

The Cape side started the second half much as they did the first, and in the 50th minute Lakay provided a great cross from the left to pick out Craig Martin’s late run into the penalty area, but the young winger steered his shot wide of the target.

On 74 minutes City fullback Thamsanqa Mkhize found himself in a good position on the right of the penalty area, but he rushed his shot/cross and saw the ball pushed away to safety by Dlamini.

In the 80th minute another great chance was spurned by the Citizens: Mkhize’s pull-back from the right byline was missed by Lakay but arrived at the feet of substitute Shane Roberts, who lacked the composure needed to hit the target.

Baroka killed off City’s hopes with a goal in the final minute of regulation: a counter attack ended with Madatsane stepping over a low cross to free up Kgaswane, who fired home a low shot for his second of the game.
