Bucs beat Stars

PIRATES EXTEND THEIR LEAD AT THE TOP OF THE TABLE

The weekend’s Absa Premiership action saw Orlando Pirates extend their lead at the top of the table to six points, albeit having played three games more than nearest chasers Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Buccaneers claimed a third straight win when they defeated Free State Stars (who played their first game since the tragic passing of winger Sinethemba Jantjie) 2-1 at Orlando Stadium on Saturday night, with goals from Musa Nyatama and Justin Shonga.

The round opened on Friday night with Bidvest Wits getting the better of Chippa United in Port Elizabeth. Deon Hotto scored the only goal as the Clever Boys kept their title hopes alive and pushed the Chilli Boys further into relegation danger.

Yet they are not as deep in trouble as Maritzburg United are, with the KwaZulu-Natal side suffering their 14th league defeat of the season (1-0 away to Highlands Park on Saturday afternoon) to remain four points adrift of the prospect of safety.

Kaizer Chiefs’ league campaign is limping to an uninspiring end after they were held 1-1 away to Black Leopards (though there was at least a goal for Dax, otherwise known as Andriamirado Andrianarimanana), while Polokwane City extended their unbeaten run to eight matches with a goalless stalemate away to SuperSport United.

Sunday’s action saw a 1-1 draw in the Durban Derby between Golden Arrows and AmaZulu – with goals from respective defenders Sadat Ouro-Akoriko and Divine Lunga – while the other match at Dr Molemela Stadium between Bloemfontein Celtic and Cape Town City was abandoned in the first half due to pitch invasions and crowd violence.

The Absa Premiership will continue with two midweek fixtures on April 17: Mamelodi Sundowns v SuperSport United and Highlands Park v Free State Stars.
