All eyes will be at Orlando Amstel Arena in Soweto this afternoon where MTN8 champions will begin to defend their title in what is seen as a blockbuster clatter against Nedbank champions Durban City.
The Soweto giants come to this match after a 2-0 win in their Betway Premiership 2026/27 opening match against PSL newbies Milford FC a week ago.
On the other hand, The Citizens are reeling after a 1-0 slender loss to Sekhukhune last weekend in their Betway Premiership opening match of the season.

City’s Captain Siphamandla Ncanana is on record arguing their squad is ready for the challenge ahead following a productive pre-season as the team prepares for Saturday’s encounter.
“We’re really looking forward to the challenge. We’ve prepared well during pre-season, we’ve started the league campaign, and now we have an opportunity to compete in one of the country’s biggest cup competitions.
‘It’s a special moment for the Club, and we want to embrace it and give a good account of ourselves.”
Standing in City’s way is an Orlando Pirates side that enjoyed an exceptional 2025/26 season, completing the domestic treble and returning to defend its MTN8 title.
Ncanana acknowledges the quality of the opposition but believes Durban City is ready for the occasion.
“It’s a privilege to captain Durban City in a fixture of this magnitude.
“Orlando Pirates are one of the biggest and most successful clubs in South African football, and they’ve earned that status through years of success.
“We have a lot of respect for them, but we’re equally excited about the opportunity to test ourselves against one of the best.”
The Citizens will be looking to produce a strong performance as they chase a place in the competition’s semi-finals.”
Meanwhile Bucs Skipper, Nkosinathi Sibisi is also on record pointing out they are familiar with the competition.
“We’re looking forward to facing Durban City and starting another MTN8 campaign. Whenever we play Durban City, it’s always a game with consequences. We know the quality they have, and we’ve prepared well as a team.”
Sibisi also reflected on the clubs’ previous meeting, the stalemate at Orlando, where City nearly staged an upset after Pirates appeared to be in complete control.
“We saw what they did to us at E’sgodini last season,” Sibisi said. “We were cruising, but they almost spoiled the party. That alone tells us the kind of team we’re coming up against, so we have to be switched on from the first minute.”

Saturday’s fixture carries a bit of history, with it being the first-ever MTN8 clash between the two sides. They have previously met in other cup competitions, the most recent of which was the 2020/21 Nedbank Cup Round of 16 clash, where goals from Kabelo Dlamini, Deon Hotto and Vincent Pule helped the Soweto Giants to a come-from-behind 3-1 win against the KwaZulu-Natal outfit, then known as Maritzburg United.
