CAPE TOWN CITY BEAT 10-MAN MARITZBURG AT HARRY GWALA STADIUM

Cape Town City beat 10-man Maritzbrug United 1-0 at Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday evening to climb up to fourth spot on the 2020-21 DStv Premiership standings.

Mduduzi Mdantsane scored for the second time this season in a game in which Riyaaz Ismail received a red card for the Team of Choice. The result leaves Maritzburg in 15th spot on the log standings after two rounds of league fixtures.

City opened the scoring in the ninth minute as Mdantsane continued his strong start to the campaign with a low finish into the bottom corner of the net.

The visitors came close to doubling their lead in the 21st minute with Bradley Ralani having the beating of Jethren Barr in the Maritzburg goal but not the crossbar.

Maritzburg’s first shot in anger fell at the feet of Keegan Buchanan 10 minutes later. The midfielder’s free-kick looked destined for the back of the net but Peter Leeuwenburgh made a good save.

The hosts were reduced to 10-men on the cusp of halftime as Ismail received his marching orders for a tackle on Craig Martin. The referee adjudged that the centre-back, who was making his debut for the club, denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

Both teams had chances to find the back of the net in the second-half, but nothing to write home about as City held on to claim all three points on their travels.
