MAJORO STRIKES LATE FOR A CITY WIN

Cape Town City overcame Polokwane City 1-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday night.

The victory took the Citizens to fourth spot on the league standings, while Rise and Shine remain 14th on the table.

The Citizens enjoyed more possession in the early stages of the match, while Rise and Shine looked dangerous on the counter attack

Rodney Ramagalela broke through the midfield in the 19th minute and he set up his Polokwane teammate Walter Musona, whose attempt went wide of the target.

But the visitors had a shot on target two minutes later when Ndivhuwo Ravhuhali unleashed a powerful shot from a free-kick and City goalkeeper Sage Stephens made an easy save.

Citizens continued to keep possession while looking to penetrate the Rise and Shine defence, but they were unable to seriously test Polokwane goalkeeper Harold Ndlovu.

City striker Lehlohonolo Majoro made a good run with the halftime break fast approaching and he pulled the trigger and his effort hit the outside of the post 37th minute.

The score was 0-0 at the interval between City and Polokwane following a tightly contested first-half in the Mother City.

The home side had a chance to break the deadlock just seven minutes into the second-half, but Lyle Lakay placed his effort wide of the target.

Polokwane coach Bernard Molekwa then made a double substitution in the 63rd minute with Jabulani Maluleke and Thabang Klaas coming on as the visitors looked to score.

As the match progressed, the Citizens began to press Rise and Shine with Majoro looking more and more dangerous for the hosts.

The former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates marksman curled his effort inches wide of the target in the 71st minute as pressure mounted on Polokwane

Majoro did find the back of the net in the closing stages of the match, but the City forward was controversially ruled offside.

However, City were then awarded a penalty after Salulani Phiri was adjudged to have handled the ball in the Polokwane box.

Majoro then stepped up and converted from the spot-kick to seal City’s 1-0 victory in stoppage-time.
