City beat Matsatsantsa

CTCFC MAINTAIN STRANGLEHOLD OVER MATSATSANTSA

Cape Town City booked their place in the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 with a 2-0 win over SuperSport United at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday evening.

Thato Mokeke and Thamsanqa Mkhize found the back of the net as the Citizens maintained their dominance over their top-flight rivals, having now beaten the Pretoria outfit on four occasions this season; across three competitions.

Benni McCarthy’s troops dominated from the onset in the Mother City and following a sustained spell of pressure, deservedly opened the scoring in the 36th minute of the clash.

Matthew Rusike forced Rowen Williams into a smart save at his near post and it was from the resulting corner-kick that a the hosts would open the scoring on the night. Former SuperSport-man ,Mokeke, nodding home Patosi’s inch-perfect cross.

The onslaught continued following the break with Williams almost man alone keeping the visitors in the game.

Williams, though, could do nothing to keep out Mkhize’s deflected effort in the 56th minute as City moved a step closer to the next round. Dean Furman’s attempted clearance fell to Patosi who dazzled the Matsatsanta defence before providing once more – this time with a neat back heel – that the City skipper fired home to double the hosts lead.

SuperSport – to their credit – improved after conceding the second goal and were only denied by an expert clearance off the line by Patosi who kept out Kagiso Malinga’s towering header in the 67th minute.

Matsatsantsa continued to probe, but struggled to find any sort of composure in the final third. In contrast, City were putting on a show for those gathered in the Mother City with the likes of Gift Links and Surprise Ralani giving the Citizens faithful a lot to cheer about.

In the end, City proved too strong for SuperSport who fell victim to McCarthy’s troops for the second time this month.
