Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo(JCPZ) celebrated the official grand opening of Sakhumzi Restaurant at Zoo Lake Park. City Parks has partnered with the owner of the legendary Sakhumzi Restaurant, with roots on Soweto’s Vilakazi Street, to transform the once-neglected Zoo Lake Park eatery into a vibrant new destination. Owner and visionary restaurateur Sakhumzi Maqubela said that the partnership with the City marks a major milestone of growth and more future developments. He said that the once neglected and vandalised open space that was inhabited by young and old substance abusers and a haven for criminal activity has received a facelift and has officially been revitalised for its intended use, to welcome and entertain residents and tourists.

“It is an honour to finally be able to launch Sakhumzi Restaurant at Zoo Lake Park. We have faced many troubles since the journey commenced. From illegal occupation to finding the community’s stolen goods on the premises. But that is over now it’s a jewel for Joburg,” said Maqubela.

He also mentioned that the launch of the restaurant creates job opportunities while also creating buzz as an attraction in the tourism space of Johannesburg.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, Cllr Lubabalo Magwentshu, reiterated that it is a momentous occasion and marks a significant milestone in the city’s journey towards being a more inclusive and prosperous Joburg.

“It is indeed a great achievement. This transformation represents more than just a culinary upgrade. It symbolises a commitment to community development and cultural celebration,” said Cllr Magwentshu.

He added that Sakhumzi with its routes embedded in the rich history of Vilakazi street brings a unique blend of flavours to the city.

“This partnership transcends beyond many borders, it exemplifies the power of public and private collaboration in uplifting our communities and supporting and promoting tourism in our city,” he said.

Cllr Magwentshu thanked Maqubela for his vision and commitment and highlighted that the city needs more partnerships like these which speaks volumes about the dedication to address the city’s social economic challenges.
