Cape Town City have broken an eight-game winless run in the DStv Premiership by defeating SuperSport United 3-0 at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The result, secured by goals from Fagrie Lakay, Mpho Makola and Tshreeq Morris, sees the Citizens record a first league victory since late January, though they remain in seventh place on the log. Matsatsantsa, whose coach Kaitano Tembo had his 100th game in charge, drop to fifth on goal difference, with Orlando Pirates rising above them.
The teams effectively cancelled each other out for the first quarter of the match, with neither goalkeeper called into significant action. Yet City gradually took control and began to assert more pressure in attack around the half hour mark.
This was first shown by a Fagrie Lakay effort from a free kick which flashed just over the crossbar, while a few minutes later Tashreeq Morris earned a penalty, with the attacking player’s foot trod on by Thatayaone Ditlhokwe as he played a pass from just inside the 18-yard area.
Lakay took on the responsibility of the spot kick and coolly beat United goalkeeper Ronwen Williams in the 35th minute, putting the Citizens 1-0 up – a lead they would deservedly hold through to the halftime interval, having been the more proactive and progressive team.
The Cape side opted for a change in midfield at the start of the second stanza, with Mpho Makola replacing Abdul Ajagun. The substitute was involved in the first chance after the restart, which saw Lakay tee up Morris for a shot on target in the 58th minute, but Williams made a solid save.
Makola made even more of an impact on the game in the 64th minute, powering into the box before exchanging passes with Thabo Nodada and stabbing home from close range to double the home team’s advantage.
It should have been 3-0 five minutes later when Lakay set up Morris with a one-one-one chance, but Williams made a fine save with his legs to deny City a third goal. Another chance to add to the score line was wasted by City on 78 minutes, with substitute Mduduzi Mdantsane hitting the post after arriving late in the box to meet Aubrey Ngoma’s cross.
City finally registered a third goal in the 85th minute, with Morris turning home Thamsanqa Mkhize’s low ball across the face of goal after another fine delivery out wide from Ngoma, this time from a corner kick.
City and SuperSport will return to DStv Premiership action on April 21 when they face Kaizer Chiefs away and Golden Arrows at home respectively.
