CITY OF JOHANNESBURG STRENGTHENS SERVICE DELIVERY EFFORTS THROUGH HIGH-IMPACT ROLLOUT IN ORANGE FARM

The City of Johannesburg commenced its High-Impact Service Delivery (HISD) programme in Orange Farm, Region G, reaffirming its commitment to responsive governance and the accelerated delivery of essential municipal services to communities.

The intervention forms part of the City’s intensified service delivery rollout aimed at improving living conditions, restoring public spaces and ensuring safer, cleaner environments for residents.

A range of critical services were delivered on the ground, including the clearing of illegal dumping sites, Pikitup waste collection services, grass cutting, rodent and pest control, as well as electrical works. The operation was supported by several City entities and departments, including City Parks and Zoo, Environmental Health Pest Control Unit, CRUM and AFSU, demonstrating a coordinated and integrated municipal response.

The City welcomed the active participation of community members who volunteered alongside municipal teams to assist in the clean-up efforts. This partnership between residents and the City reflects a shared commitment to building safer and more dignified communities.

One of the community volunteers, Mr Tshepo Thulo, a local group leader, expressed appreciation for the intervention and emphasised the importance of creating a safer environment for residents: “We came here to volunteer and help clean up our area because it is not safe for our children, especially when they go to school. By clearing the overgrown grass and cleaning the space, we are making the area safer and more visible for everyone, especially our children and the elderly.”

Mr Thulo further acknowledged the City’s contribution, noting:

“The City is here helping us with the equipment, machinery and manpower needed to clean up the area. We are hopeful that this support will continue.”

Residents also used the opportunity to raise a constructive request regarding the need for a designated and properly managed waste disposal site within the Orange Farm area. Community members noted that similar facilities are available in other parts of the city, including Soweto, where formal dumping sites with bins and on-site monitoring assist residents in disposing of waste responsibly.

The community has called for the establishment of a similar facility in Orange Farm to help curb illegal dumping and promote cleaner neighbourhoods. This request will form part of ongoing engagements as the City continues to assess service delivery needs and identify opportunities to strengthen waste management solutions. The City welcomes this input as part of its ongoing community engagement efforts and recognises the importance of accessible waste management infrastructure in supporting sustainable service delivery outcomes.

The City of Johannesburg remains committed to increasing the rollout of HISD interventions across communities, particularly in areas where urgent service needs have been identified. The HISD programme in Orange Farm will continue tomorrow, with municipal teams scheduled to provide additional electricity services in the area.
