CITY’S THABILE MABELE PROUDLY WEARS MRS TOWNSHIP SA CROWN

Brümilda Swartbooi

At 48, Thabile Mabele is proving that you can pursue your dreams and reinvent yourself at any age. Recently her childhood dream came full circle when she was announced Mrs Township South Africa (MTSA) 2026 at the finals. “It is never too late to chase your dreams. I hope my journey encourages every woman who has ever thought, ‘I’ve missed my chance’ or ‘I’m too old’.”

“Life doesn’t end at 40 or 50. Don’t let age, fear, or what people say stop you from becoming the woman you were created to be.”

Mabele hopes more women chase their dreams relentlessly. “If my story inspires just one woman to believe in herself again, step out of her comfort zone, or give her dream another chance, then this crown has already fulfilled part of its purpose. I want every woman to know that it is never too late to chase your dreams.”

Mabele is an Employment Equity and Diversity Management Consultant in the City of Johannesburg. She grew up in a township in KwaZulu-Natal, Esikhawini, where life wasn’t always easy, but filled with love, strong family values, and a real sense of community.

She says one of the greatest lessons she learned growing up was the importance of giving and sharing, even when we had very little. “My family always believed that if we had something to share, we should share it with those who had less. That spirit of generosity stayed with me and inspired me to co-found the ThandoM Foundation with my daughter. Through our foundation, we spread love, hope, and kindness by supporting less privileged individuals and families through food drives, donations, and community outreach initiatives.”

She says winning the title also reminded her that dreams do come true, and often in ways we never expect. “It was a beautiful surprise and a reminder that God’s timing is always perfect.”

She wants to continue serving communities through women empowerment, food drives, and work as an anti-harassment advocate. “I believe this title will help me reach more people and build meaningful partnerships to create lasting change,” she adds.

Her message to girls is to never let where you come from determine where you are going. “Your background does not define your future.  Believe in yourself, dream big, and don’t be afraid to work hard for the life you want. If a girl from a township like me can become Mrs Township South Africa 2026, then you too can achieve your dreams.”
