ROYAL EAGLES CLOSE GAP ON STELLIES

Round 20 of the 2018/19 National First Division season saw Stellenbosch have their lead eaten into by Royal Eagles, while Ajax Cape Town were involved in a classic with Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.

Stellies were held 0-0 at Kanyamazane Stadium on Saturday by Mbombela United, a result which allowed Royal Eagles to close to within six points on the same day with their 5-0 hammering of Pretoria University.

Ajax would have been hoping to further narrow the leaders’ advantage to five points with a home win over Tshakhuma on Sunday, but the teams played out an incredible 4-4 draw at Athlone Stadium, with TTM’s Nhlanhla Mgaga scoring a hat-trick.

Elsewhere, Ubuntu Cape Town claimed a vital 2-1 home win over Jomo Cosmos on Friday in their battle against relegation, and Witbank Spurs couldn’t do the same as they were held 1-1 at home by Uthongathi.

TS Galaxy edged Real Kings 1-0 at the Kameelrivier Stadium, TS Sporting and Maccabi drew 2-2, and Richards Bay ensured Cape Umoya United remained on the fringes of the relegation battle with a 2-1 win at Umhlathuze Sports Complex.

The NFD will be in recess next weekend for the last 16 round of the Nedbank Cup, before continuing with a full round of fixtures on February 22-24.
