24 June 2019 – Banyana Banyana are enjoying their rest period and recharging their batteries after returning from the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup currently underway in France.
South Africa was knocked out in the first round following three losses – vs Spain, China and Germany.
The squad is, however, now wiser, more experienced and very determined to prove their rise to the top tier of world football by dominating the COSAFA Women’s Championship.
Both coach Desiree Ellis and captain Janine van Wyk said the side would now be looking to prove their progress when they defend their COSAFA Women’s Championship title at the 2019 finals in Port Elizabeth from 31 July to 11 August.
“We are defending champions in the COSAFA Cup and we want to win that again and earn qualification for the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics,” said Ellis.
Van Wyk said she and her teammates were looking forward to the Port Elizabeth tournament where Banyana Banyana are aiming to win the title for a third successive edition.
The COSAFA Women’s Under-20 Championship will also be staged in PE from 1-11 August.
The draws for both competitions will be made on 3 July in Johannesburg.
