When Mama Sipiwe from Hosanna Community Care Centre in Hazyview attended the Clover Mama Afrika’s A Pinch Of Spice Curry Course, she gained far more than a collection of authentic South African Indian recipes. She gained practical skills that she has since transformed into an opportunity to empower others.
Inspired by what she had learned, Mama Sipiwe recently hosted a hands-on curry workshop for young people in her community, passing on the techniques and confidence she acquired during the training. Participants discovered the unique role of aromatic spices, learned how to prepare flavourful curries from scratch, and even mastered the art of making soft, homemade naan bread.
The workshop was filled with enthusiasm as participants rolled up their sleeves, worked side by side and experienced the joy of creating delicious meals while learning valuable culinary skills that could one day generate an income or enrich their families and communities.
This workshop forms part of Mama Sipiwe’s ongoing commitment to developing young people through practical, life-changing skills. Already this year, she has trained 71 young people, equipping them with knowledge that can open doors to employment, entrepreneurship, and greater self-reliance. Each new skill she acquires is shared with others, bringing to life the Clover Mama Afrika philosophy of “I Learn. I Earn. I Teach.”
For Clover Mama Afrika, this is what sustainable community development looks like. Every training opportunity creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond the original participant. As each Mama shares her knowledge, skills continue to spread, empowering more people, strengthening communities and creating new opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship and food security.
