GAUTENG DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT RALLIES AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING

The Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD) has taken a strong stand against human trafficking by launching its Trafficking in Persons Week commemoration in Meadowlands, Central Corridor. This initiative coincides with Human Trafficking Awareness Month, observed globally in October. The department partnered with key stakeholders, including the Hawks, Community Safety, MDN Taxi Association, Act Africa, and the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, to reinforce their efforts.

This united front aims to raise awareness, particularly among school children, about the dangers of human trafficking, with a strong focus on prevention and education. Chair of Chairs, Honourable Dulton Adams, praised the initiative, saying, “I commend the organizers for this great effort and invite you all to join us in the fight against human trafficking and abductions. Let’s expose criminal elements and protect our children.”

South Africa is both a source and destination for human trafficking, with an estimated 250,000 victims. The Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act (PACOTIP) of 2013 plays a crucial role in combating this crime. GDSD supports victims through comprehensive services, including psychological counselling, medical care, and legal aid.

As GDSD continues its campaign across the province, it calls on citizens to unite in the fight against human trafficking, working together to create a safer future for all.
