Lulama Mgcina

In a heartwarming collaboration between the office of Councillor Lubabalo Magwentshu, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, and aid organisation Gift of the Givers, over 400 pairs of school shoes have been donated to Durban Deep Primary School and Thulani Secondary School, marking a significant stride towards uplifting pupils.

This noble initiative, led by Gift of the Givers under the “Soles of our Souls” campaign, in conjunction with Healthcare Workers 4 Palestine SA, aims to honour the memory of innocent children lost in Gaza by providing essential school shoes to underprivileged South African students. Through community solidarity and support, this campaign fosters unity across diverse backgrounds.

Cllr Magwentshu expressed appreciation for the donation, highlighting its profound impact. “Witnessing those affected by war extending compassion to assist others is deeply moving. Despite facing their own crises, these healthcare workers have shown remarkable humanity, uplifting impoverished families in South Africa. We are immensely grateful to Gift of the Givers for this invaluable contribution,” he remarked.

Both Durban Deep Primary and Thulani Secondary schools are situated in economically disadvantaged areas, where many families struggle below the poverty line.

Itumeleng Panyane, the Principal of Thulani Secondary School, conveyed her gratitude, stating: “This donation significantly boosts the dignity of our learners. Many lacked basic footwear, sometimes leading to absenteeism. This gift brings hope.”

The commitment to bolstering community support remains steadfast.

“With limited resources, we continuously seek partnerships with organisations willing to address our learners’ pressing needs, ensuring they have access to quality education,” emphasised Cllr Magwentshu.

This ongoing endeavour reflects a collective aspiration to nurture every pupil’s educational journey, preventing anyone from being hindered by lack of essential provisions.
