Greenside Primary School claimed first prize at the Science Scuffle finals and prize-giving ceremony, hosted by the City of Johannesburg’s Library and Information Services Directorate (LIS) at Noordgesig Library on 11 June 2026. The Science Scuffle is an inter-school knockout quiz for Grade 6 and 7 learners, consisting of six learners per team. The quiz questions are based on books from the special science collections.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development, Cllr Thapelo Amad, congratulated the winning team. “This competition has shown the thirst for knowledge among our young people. In the bigger picture, all the teams are winners. You have demonstrated the spirit of the youth of this country. Congratulations to the winning team and to all participants. It is a game of numbers, which means that, in essence, all teams are winners,” said Cllr Amad.
He further thanked the organisers and stakeholders for the empowering project. “The City is proud of you and remains committed to supporting this initiative,” he added
The programme aims to teach learners how to find information in resources, a valuable skill they can use throughout their lives. Each team consisted of six learners. School teams competed at library, zonal, regional and metropolitan levels, with the overall winner being decided at the Metropolitan Final.
Schools had to race against the clock, testing both their knowledge and teamwork as they worked to complete their rounds as quickly as possible. Speed and accuracy were essential, as only the top 16 fastest-performing schools qualified for the next stage.
The qualifying schools then advanced to the regional rounds. The prizes were sponsored by the Friends of the Johannesburg Libraries.
