The City of Johannesburg’s Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) is currently processing thousands of applications to recruit 500 new trainees for its next intake, set to begin in 2026..

Shortlisted candidates will soon be contacted by the JMPD Human Resources Department. Successful applicants will undergo 18 months of intensive training at the JMPD Training Academy. On completion, they might be considered for appointment as fully fledged JMPD officers.

“During the training, trainees will receive a stipend in accordance with the City’s Policy and will be subject to training contracts, Academy rules, and RTMC training policy. Due to the intensive recruitment process, the Metro Police Training is expected to commence on the 1st of January 2026,” says JMPD spokesman Xolani Fihla.

Applications were open from Wednesday, 25 June to Tuesday, 8 July 2025. The City had specifically called on Johannesburg youth to seize the opportunity. Only online applications were considered, and applicants were required to apply within the Joburg region where they reside.
