JOBURG MAYOR KICK STARTS THE PROCESS TO RESPOND TO RESIDENTS OF FLEURHOF

The City of Johannesburgs’ Revenue Protection Team today, responded swiftly to the concerns raised by Fleurhof residents and removed illegal electricity connections in the area.

This is the start of numerous service delivery orientated interventions that will be undertaken in the coming weeks.

After receiving the memorandum from the protesting residents yesterday, Joburg Executive Mayor, Cllr Kabelo Gwamanda, assured residents that his office will respond within the next seven days.

The Executive Mayor mandated the City Manager and his executive to put in place a comprehensive plan to deal with challenges face in the area.

To further expedite the City interventions, the Acting Chief Operations Officer and senior officials met early today to formulate an urgent multi-disciplinary war room where a task team was established to tackle the issues raised by the community.

The City is aware that there are other urgent matters requiring to be addressed in all the seven regions of the City, however, we agreed on targeted service delivery blitz focusing in Fleurhof, and other areas will be addressed going forward.

Vandalism of infrastructure is a huge challenge facing the City. However, there have been over 120 years of criminal convictions pertaining to City power infrastructure which signifies that we are making progress.

The City, specifically City Power, is now working together with communities by adopting a people centric approach to protect our infrastructure.

Over 1000 applications have already been received from residents to assist the City. The City is also bringing in board the civil society on this journey of protecting our infrastructure.

The City is committed to a people-centred approach which responds to the different needs of people. We will regularly communicate with the community on progress every step of the way.

Although some of the issues raised by the community are the competency of other spheres of government, the City will through the intergovernmental relations engage its counterparts to find everlasting solutions.

After his election Mayor Gwamanda assure Joburg residents that the Government of Local Unity is committed to maintaining a stable, functional, responsive and services oriented government.

He stated that the stability and efficient functioning of the City is a priority and the GLU will strive to at all times maintain a decorum, commitment and diligence in leading the City.
