MMC KUNENE OUTLINES ACHIEVEMENTS OVER THE PAST 100 DAYS

The City of Johannesburg’s Member of Mayoral Council (MMC) for Transport, Cllr. Kenny Kunene has released a report outlining achievements since he took office following his appointment on 03 February 2023.

MMC Kunene has been responsible for providing oversight and appropriate strategic leadership required for the Department to deliver on its mandate.

Since taking office in the past 100 days, MMC Kunene oversaw the implementation of key activities, interventions and projects including a media briefing held on the 9th of March 2023, during which MMC Kunene tabled the state of affairs of Metrobus, Rea Vaya and JRA.

A number of interventions to guide transport planning, project development and direction for future economic and transportation investments within CoJ were completed.

These include:

• The Region G transport master plan encompasses the areas of Protea South, Eldorado Park, Lenasia, Zacharia Park, Slovo Park, Ennerdale, Poortjie, Orange Farm and Stretford. The border lies along the N1, N12 and Golden Highway transport corridors traverse the region.

• The Roodepoort CBD transport master plan which lies along the western edge of the historic mining belt within Region C of the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) in ward 84 and provides a western link to Johannesburg CBD for areas such as Kagiso, Krugersdorp South, Soweto, Bram Fisherville and Dobsonville.

The area has experienced a decline in economic growth over many years due to issues in its urban and transport environment. It has also suffered from urban decay due to the lack of social and economic amenities and infrastructure; poor connectivity, urban safety, management; inefficient transport systems, congestion; and traffic issues.

Other highlights include Bus Operating Contract Agreement (BOCA) between the City and the Alexandra Bus Company (PTY) LTD outlining how the contract will be managed and how the fee per kilometre compensation is executed, is now ready to be signed.

The Orlando Non-Motorised Transport facility was also completed within the hundred days, with much excitement as the project accommodates diverse modes, users and activities including walking, public transport, private vehicles, nearby businesses, and residents.

On the 12th of April 2023, MMC Kunene signed a Protocol engagement document with Regional Taxi Structures: SANTACO and NTA which guides engagement protocols between the City and the taxi industry.
