JOBURG MULTI-PARTY GOVERNMENT IS AT WORK DESPITE ATTEMPTS BY FOUL ACTORS, SAYS JOZI MAYOR

I have taken note of the utterances of the Chair of Chairs, Cllr Colleen Makhubele, who has among other things purported to be the Acting Speaker of the Johannesburg Council, despite the Standing Rules and Orders of Council being clear about the process of filling the Office of the Speaker in the event of a vacancy, as is the case.

Cllr Makhubele and those who she is working with, cannot play fast and loose with the laws of the country in order to grab power. When the Office of the Speaker is vacant, an election must take place as per democratic processes. Assuming the Office of the Speaker cannot happen by coronation.

The minority opposition bloc has joined the ANC chorus by calling for a motion of no confidence in the Executive Mayor, and as it follows, the Multi-Party Executive of the City of Johannesburg. It is clear that there is a desperate and coordinated attempt to grab power of the City, without any regard for residents and their service delivery needs.

Despite these political games being played, I can guarantee residents that we are not distracted nor will service delivery be affected. The repair and rebuild of Johannesburg is a serious responsibility and action, which we will not allow to be stalled by a sordid campaign to capture the City.

Over the coming days and weeks, there will be attempts to paint a picture of instability in the City of Johannesburg, this disinformation will be peddled by political parties and other

interested people and organisations whose lines of corruption have been severed by the Johannesburg Multi-Party Government.

Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs) are hard at work; City Departments are operating at full steam; Entitles are effecting their mandated service delivery functions; and Council’s legislative responsibilities are continuing under the stewardship of the Secretary of Council.

The Johannesburg Multi-Party Government will over the next two-days be interviewing candidates to fill the post of City Manager. As we are determined to ensure effective leadership of the City Administration by appointing a permanent chief administrator.

Furthermore, despite claims that I have dodged the residents of Soweto, on Saturday, 10 September the Multi-Party Government will be meeting with the community of Soweto to provide public feedback, following a series of engagements with Soweto Parliament, Soweto Faith-Based Organisations, National Government Departments and Eskom to find a long-lasting and sustainable solution for Soweto and other Eskom-supplied areas in Johannesburg.

The practical task of repairing and rebuilding Johannesburg is difficult, which we are making significant strides in. Hearing residents commend the work of the Multi-Party Government and seeing the rollout of service delivery programmes across the City’s seven Regions is for the benefit of residents, but not to our political opponents who have only left a trail of destruction when at the helm of the City.
