The 6th annual edition of the games was held over the past weekend on 28-29 October 2023, for the first time in Johannesburg after all the previous editions were held in Ekurhuleni.
With hundreds of youngsters from around Gauteng and Reggio Emilia in Italy competing for the coveted OR Tambo-Socini Social Cohesion Games, it was Team Joburg who triumphed to claim the 2023 title.
Young athletes between the ages of 12 and 19, including Team School Sport and Italy’s Team Reggio Emelia took on each other sporting codes including athletics; chess; soccer; basketball; swimming; and volleyball.
Speaking during the closing ceremony Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Morakane Mosupyoe outlined the importance of such games. “We continue to realise how sport can foster social cohesion and nation-building and therefore it is important for us to ensure the nurturing and growth of sporting talent from every corner of Gauteng. The OR Tambo-Soncini Social Cohesion Games allow for the breaking of barriers and giving opportunities to disregarded and hidden talent. They also allow us to keep the dream of OR Tambo and Giuseppe Soncini alive, to nurture and foster unity and social cohesion in the world’ mentioned MEC Mosupyoe.
The 2023 edition of the games was also used to commemorate 30year anniversary since the passing of liberation struggle icon Oliver Reginald Tambo, who the games were named after.
