KAIZER CHIEFS, MAMELODI SUNDOWNS CLASH IN DSTV PREMIERSHIP OPENING ACT

The DStv Premiership will open with a heavyweight thriller between last season’s top two, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, at the FNB Stadium on Saturday 24 October 2020.

Kick-off at 15h30, live on SS PSL channel 202 on DStv.

Kaizer Chiefs ended the 2019/20 league season with a heart-breaking draw with Baroka FC which cost them the title, as they finished two points short of Mamelodi Sundowns’ championship-winning tally of 59 points.

The Amakhosi showed solid home form through 2019/20, as they claimed 27 points from 30 matches, but their four home defeats included a costly 1-0 reverse at the hands of ‘Downs in August 2020 which went a long way in deciding the title.

Mamelodi Sundowns claimed a third successive league title in dramatic style when they overtook Kaizer Chiefs on the final day of the 2019/20 campaign, though their success has led to the departure of highly-rated coach Pitso Mosimane, who has taken on arguably the biggest club job in Africa at Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

The Brazilians took 26 points from 30 away matches in 2019/20, with their only losses on the road coming at the hands of Golden Arrows, Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City.

In head-to-head stats, Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs have met in 70 league matches since 1985. The Amakhosi have claimed 28 wins compared to 22 for the Brazilians, while 20 matches have been drawn. The Soweto side has won 17 of their 35 home matches in the rivalry, suffering six defeats in the process.

The teams’ two league clashes last season saw them each claim an away win: Chiefs won 2-0 at Sundowns in the first half of the campaign thanks to a brace from Samir Nurkovic, while the Brazilians claimed revenge with a 1-0 triumph in the return with a strike from Gaston Sirino.

Chiefs’ line-up from their 1-0 loss to Sundowns on 27 August 2020: Akpeyi, Frosler, Moleko (Zulu 76’), Cardoso, Mathoho, Sasman, Katsande (Agay 46’), Sifama (Zuma 46’ [Mphahlele 90+4’]), Parker, Manyama, Kambole (Billiat 46’).

Sundowns’ line-up from their 1-0 win over Chiefs on 27 August 2020: Mweene, Ngcongca, Madisha, Coetzee, Lebusa, Lakay, Mkhulise (Mahlambi 80’), Kekana (Arendse 83’), Zwane (Jali 65’), Sirino (Maboe 65’), Meza (Langerman 80’).
