LANDMARK PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP REVITALISES THE CITY

A groundbreaking partnership has been forged between the City of Johannesburg and Jozi My Jozi, marking a pivotal moment in the efforts to rejuvenate the heart of the City.

Under the banner of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), signed in November 2023, the collaboration signifies a shared commitment to breathe new life into the inner city.

Jozi My Jozi (JMJ), a non-profit organisation born from the collective efforts of corporate entities, NGOs, and City Improvement Districts (CIDs), stands as a beacon of hope for Johannesburg and its residents.

With a mission to inspire and restore pride of the City, JMJ rallies a diverse array of stakeholders, including major financial institutions and businesses, illustrating the power of public-private partnerships in driving urban revitalisation.

At the core of this agreement lies a unified vision to leverage the strengths of all stakeholders towards asset enhancement and the reinvigoration of the central business district (CBD) and surrounding areas.

Through collaborative efforts, the Nelson Mandela Bridge has already witnessed remarkable improvements, including the installation of solar-powered lighting systems and enhanced security measures, signaling the beginning of a transformative journey.

Further initiatives, such as the Gateway Programme, aim to beautify and enhance key entry points into the city, strategically selected to leave a lasting impression on commuters and visitors alike.

This comprehensive endeavour involves multifaceted interventions, from clean-up operations and infrastructure repairs to the installation of modern amenities like solar lighting and CCTV cameras.

The MOU, inked by Executive Mayor  Kabelo Gwamanda, stands as a testament to the dedication of both parties (CoJ and JMJ), with a commitment spanning 18 months.

Irene Mafune, the Regional Director of Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM) Region F, lauds the agreement as a monumental step forward, emphasizing the transformative potential of collaboration between the public and private sectors.

“The City acknowledges the invaluable contribution of organisations like Jozi My Jozi and their pivotal role in effecting positive change within the inner city,” Mafune says.

Bea Swanepoel, the Acting CEO of Jozi My Jozi, echoes the same sentiment: “We are optimistic for the future and the opportunity to pioneer sustainable solutions that will shape Johannesburg for generations to come.”

With a meticulous plan of action in place, spearheaded by a dedicated team of city officials, Jozi My Jozi members and key stakeholders, this strategic partnership embarks on a journey towards a brighter, more vibrant future for Joburg. Together, they stand poised to write a new chapter in the city’s history, one marked by progress, unity, and enduring transformation.
