Premier Makhura welcomes first quarter job increases in Gauteng

Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, has welcomed the increase in jobs created in the province during the first quarter of 2017.

The Quarterly Labour Force results released by Statistics South Africa on Thursday, 1 June 2017, indicates that the Gauteng economy has created the highest number of jobs in the first quarter, with 81 000 new jobs created.

“We welcome this growth, it’s an indication that our efforts to get the provincial economy to recover and grow in a way that is inclusive and creates jobs are bearing fruits. “We will continue with our programme of reaching out to business to build sustainable partnerships towards job creation and economic growth,” said Premier Makhura.

The increase was largely driven by employment in the province’s mining sector, followed by construction, utilities and private households.  According to the survey, employment rose in mining with 19, 3 %, construction with 12, 5, utilities at 11, 2% and private households with 10, 5% in the province.
