MAYOR PHALATSE CONTINUES GOLDEN REPAIR TOUR AFTER SOWETO FLOODS

As part of her oversight duties, the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Mpho Phalatse, recently returned to Region D in Soweto to check on mop-up operations after the recent floods.

City departments and entities have been on the ground restoring order.

The purpose of these inspections is to check the extent of the floods in the City and to have an idea on what resources are required for the repair work.

“We are here to assess our response, how good it is, how swift it is, where are the challenges, what needs to happen going forward. The good news is that everywhere we have been, the City is at work, officials are committed,” said Cllr Phalatse surrounded by happy residents in Kliptown, where people were still seen drying out their furniture in the sun.

The mayor was joined by Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Human Settlements Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso, Transport MMC Cllr Funzela Ngobeni, Finance MMC Cllr Julie Suddaby and Community Development MMC Cllr Ronald Harris for the oversight visit.

Cllr Ngobeni gave an undertaking for one of the busiest eroded road, Union Road in Kliptown that is currently inaccessible that it will be dealt with soon so that vehicles can start to move and continue with business as usual.

The mayor also reassured people in the area that they are finding solutions to the disaster. “Human Settlements through MMC Mabaso is also ready to receive people into proper shelter.   There should be intervention to prevent any other possible flooding and move people within the flood-line. The process has started and a lot of work has already been done,” said Cllr Phalatse.

The mayor wrapped the programme by handing out food parcels to community mostly affected by these floods in Kliptown and Meadowlands Zone 10.
