A fire at the Booysens informal settlement in the early hours of Saturday sadly claimed at least two lives and destroyed 37 shacks.
According to witnesses, the fire claimed the lives of a couple inside one of the shacks.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Anthea Leitch, extends her condolences to the friends and family of the victims, and calls on residents in settlements like these to take extra precautions as they are in a particularly high-risk category for fire.
This same settlement experienced the destruction of over 1,000 shacks in January 2021.
The City of Johannesburg currently has well over 300 informal settlements, with more being added as the constant influx of migration continues.
