MMC MABASO APPLAUDS NEAR-COMPLETE STUDENT HOUSING AS URBAN RENEWAL MODEL

In a bold fusion of comfort, functionality, and modern design, the R18.6 million Nederburg Student Accommodation in Hillbrow is fast emerging as a beacon of opportunity for Johannesburg’s youth. Managed by the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (Joshco), it is aimed at providing affordable, quality housing for students in the inner city.

The MMC for Human Settlements, Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso, recently conducted an oversight visit to the nearly completed facility, praising its transformation from a conventional social housing project into a dynamic student residence.

Originally intended for general social housing, the 10-storey building at 153 Wolmarans Street has been repurposed to address the growing demand for student accommodation. Located just 600 metres from the University of Johannesburg’s Doornfontein campus and 2.4 km from Wits University, the Nederburg development is now 98% complete and will soon accommodate over 200 students from nearby institutions.

“This is more than just bricks and mortar – it’s a symbol of inclusion, opportunity, and smart planning,” said MMC Mabaso during his visit, commending the quality and intention behind the redevelopment.

The residence features 60 fully furnished units spread across 10 floors. Each room comes equipped with a bed, wardrobe, fridge, stove, bookshelf, headboard, pedestal, bathroom cupboard, and a she-bin. Safety and connectivity are prioritised through the inclusion of CCTV on every floor and full Wi-Fi access.

The ground floor includes a reception area, two dedicated study rooms, a discussion room, and a computer lab. The rooftop has been designed as a multifunctional space, offering laundry facilities (including washing machines and dryers) and a caretaker’s room—creating a secure, self-contained environment tailored to student life.

Once Joshco receives an occupational certificate and gets accredited with institutions of higher learning, students will take occupation. Students may apply through their institution’s portal or do walk-ins. The rent will be based on the National Student Financial Aid Scheme rate. The building also boasts a biometric system and there is 24/7 security. For more details, please visit www.joshco.co.za or contact Andile Nkosi on +27 (65) 968-2219.

In line with JOSHCO’s broader city development vision, a garden area on the premises is also set to be refurbished, providing students with a green, communal outdoor space for relaxation and social interaction.

While social housing remains a core priority, student accommodation is an equally urgent need in a city where thousands of young people travel long distances to access education. The Nederburg Student Accommodation offers a dignified, functional, and supportive space for students to thrive—academically and personally.
