MOSEAMEDI BRACE LEADS MARITZBURG INTO MAIDEN TKO FINAL

  • 24 NOV 2019

Maritzburg United beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in a thrilling Telkom Knockout semifinal clash at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Sunday afternoon, to book their place in next month’s showpiece.

Judas Moseamedi scored a brace for the KwaZulu-Natal side who will face Mamelodi Sundowns in the final, at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on the 14th of December. Yagan Sasman found the back of the net for Chiefs on the day.

Maritzburg were on the front foot from the get go with Bruce Bvuma called into action as early as the 5th minute to keep out Pogiso Sanoka’s cross-cum-shot from bulging the back of the net.

Keagan Buchanan then pushed his rasping attempt inches wide in the 19th minute before Mxolisi Kunene forced Bvuma into another good save two minutes later.

Maritzburg were finally rewarded for their efforts on the half-hour mark with a mistake from Daniel Cardoso gifting the visitors the opener.

The Chiefs defender’s miscued back pass fell into the path of Moseamedi who rounded Bvuma before passing the ball into the back of an open net.

Chiefs finally conjured a notable chance at goal six minutes after the break as Bernard Parker pushed his header attempt narrowly wide.

Maritzburg, though, regained their dominance soon after should’ve doubled their lead just short of the hour mark, but Daylon Claasen could only succeed in guiding his attempt onto the woodwork.

Moseamedi then missed two gilt-edged chances in quick succession before Chiefs levelled matters.

Maritzburg made to rue their missed chances as Sasman pulled the two teams level in the 78th minute. Richad Ofori pulled off a superb save to deny Samir Nurkovic, but Sasman was there to stroke home the rebound.

The Team of Choice regained their lead six minutes later through that man Moseamedi who volleyed home Bandile Shandu’s pin-point cross to silence the home fans.

Chiefs pushed forward in an attempt to push the game into extra-time, but Maritzburg would hold on to book their place in a maiden TKO final.
