STELLENBOSCH EXTEND LEAD IN NFD

Round 11 of the 2018/19 National First Division saw Stellenbosch open up their lead at the top of the log, while bottom-of-the-table Ubuntu Cape Town helped them out by claiming a first win of the season.

Stellies had to work hard for the three points this weekend, defeating Jomo Cosmos 3-2 at the Idas Valley Stadium thanks to goals from Iqraam Rayners, Leletu Skelem and Deano van Rooyen, but their endeavour was rewarded on Sunday when nearest chasers Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila were beaten 1-0 at Ubuntu, leaving the gap between the teams at four points.

Also on Saturday, Cape Umoya United’s disastrous campaign continued as they scored an own goal to see Real Kings win 1-0 at the Sugar Ray Stadium, Ajax Cape Town slipped further off the promotion pace with a 2-1 loss at Witbank Spurs, TS Sporting and Richards Bay drew 2-2 at Kabokweni Stadium, and Uthongathi’s hopes of breaking into the top three were dashed with a 2-0 loss at Maccabi FC.

The big news in the wake of the results was the resignation of Ajax head coach Muhsin Ertugral, who announced his decision on Sunday at the same time as Mhlengi Sigwebela was scoring the only goal between Ubuntu and Tshakhuma, while Pretoria University were held 1-1 at TS Galaxy.

The NFD will wrap up this set of matches with Mbombela United v Royal Eagles on Wednesday, 14 November and return after the international break with a full round of fixtures on the weekend of 24-25 November.
