SIYABONGA NOMVETHE ANNOUNCES HIS RETIREMENT

The PSL’s all-time-leading goal scorer and AmaZulu striker, Siyabonga Nomvethe has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40 during a press conference held at Moses Mabhida Stadium on 14 September 2018.

The former Bafana Bafana striker, says goodbye to a career spanning two decades which famously began with African Wanderers, at the age of 17.

Nomvethe’s playing contract will runout at the end of December. A beneficiary match in honour of the legend will soon be announced.

The ever-humble legend had this to say in appreciation: “I have a long list of people to thank for playing a big part in my career, but I’m grateful to God more than anything because this is a gift I was given by him.

“I have to thank my wife Nompumelelo, my mother, my whole family, Pro-Sport International, the management of AmaZulu and all the supporters and so many people who have supported me throughout the years.”

“Of-course I must thank my teammates, the coach, former teams and former teammates. All the coaches with Bafana Bafana, teammates and everyone who contributed positively in my career in the whole of South Africa.”

“It’s time for the youngsters to take over. Football is about playing with your heart. I have done my part. I’m very happy. It’s time to say goodbye,” said Bhele.

AmaZulu General Manager, Lunga Sokhela thanked Bhele’s contribution to Usuthu since joining the club in 2016.

“He’s been a great influence at AmaZulu, an absolute professional from day one at the club. I personally take my hat off to Bhele for being a great example to many upcoming youngsters in the sport.

“However, Bhele is still part of the squad. He is available for selection. This is just to announce his last season for the club,” said Sokhela.

The 40-year-old man has plied his trade in Italy and Denmark in the Serie-A, Serie-B and the Danish Superliga where he won a number of titles.

His staggering career has seen him finish league top scorer more than once in the PSL and amass domestic titles, and a few individual accolades. He hangs up his boots with a proud 121 goal-tally to his name with current teammate Mabhuti Khenyeza (35) the closest player to his record currently active to date.
